Chapter Three

“Hey, Jeff, go slower, damn it!” Trinity hurried to keep up with his long strides. If she hadn’t been tall as well, she’d have broken into a run already.

They had just left the ER, where Jeff had been thoroughly checked out. They had treated him for dehydration and given him a CT scan, since his memory loss had concerned the doctor, who expected a head injury caused by his attacker.

It would have been pointless to explain that a demon had hypnotized him and drained his energy.

“I told you I’m fine. What are you, my mother? Even my mother never hovered this much.”

“Your mother never watched you almost die, asshole! And for your information, I’m asking you to slow down because I don’t feel like running right now.”

He stopped abruptly and she nearly crashed into his broad back.

“Sorry,” he muttered. “I just -- I’m feeling better.”

“You look pissed off.”

His dark eyes blazed. “Wouldn’t you be? The last thing I remember is taking a cold shower. Then you’re hovering over me calling me your boyfriend. What a fucked-up night.” He curled his lip and strode toward Trinity’s car. “I just want to get my bike and go home.”

“No way. I’m not letting you drive home after what happened.”

“Let’s get this straight, Trin. You don’t give me orders. I’m done with you messing with my head.” He jabbed a finger at his temple.

“Jeff, please, listen to me. I have to talk to you about Thomas.”

“How can you even mention that freak to me? From what you said, your damn soulmate tried to kill me, but I feel fine.”

“After a few bags of fluid. Jeff, he --”

“What is he? Some kind of vampire?”

“Get in the car so we can talk.” He shot her an annoyed look, but stormed into the passenger seat. Trinity slid behind the wheel and turned to him. “Jeff, Thomas is a demon, and I don’t think he’s my soulmate.”

“Think? You don’t think he’s your soulmate. I’m outta here --”

She grasped his muscular arm, knowing she couldn’t hold him if he wanted to go. “I don’t care if he’s my soulmate or not. I’d hate anyone who tried to hurt you.”

He paused, holding her gaze, and his furious expression softened the slightest bit. “Why?”

“Because I love you, you big dope.”

“You love me how? Like a friend? Like a pet? Or is it that you’re used to having me around and you’re afraid to be without me?”

“Oh, please.” She drew back, furious because he knew her so well. “I’m not afraid of -- yeah, I am. I don’t want to think about life without you.”

“Then did it ever cross your mind that maybe I’ve always been your soulmate?”

She closed her eyes and shook her head. “I don’t want to think about that stuff anymore.”

“So where does that leave us?”

“That’s up to you. This is the second demon in the past two months that’s appeared at the cabin. You know I come from a long line of witches, Jeff, but way back in the Wild family history, my ancestors were witch warriors.
